Much Wenlock & Wenlock Edge.

“Every visitor falls in love with Much Wenlock” (Guidebook quote).

Home of the “modern Olympics” - resurrected in 1850 by Dr. William Penny Brookes and continuing uninterrupted until today (Town “Trail” visiting the major sights involved).

A town in miniature filled with a good range of individual shops, traditional pubs and Tudor, Jacobean and Georgian buildings, including Monastic ruins - Wenlock Priory (English Heritage).

Wenlock Edge - A 400 million year old coral reef with many easily visible fossils throughout the area. There are “Waymarked trials” throughout the woods with outstanding views (see “Ippiken’s rock” and “Major’s Leap”).

Ironbridge Gorge (World Heritage site) - 10 amazing museums - one glorious valley - 200 years of industrial heritage - including the world’s first iron bridge.

Bridgnorth. - This market town, founded in the 11th Century, consists of High Town perched on a sandstone cliff and Low Town on the banks of the river Severn. A victorian Cliff railway (funicular) travels between the two.

Severn Valley Railway, Theatre on the Steps, museums, Churches, the castle ruins and the Guildhall are all worth visiting.

Severn Valley Railway (SVR). - Steam railway travels daily (May to September & holidays) between Bridgnorth and Kidderminster via Bewdley along the picturesque Severn valley.

Ludlow. - Ludlow Castle (1086) - princes in the tower story and Richard III. Annual festival (June/July) & Michelin starred restaurants with “Foodie” markets make this a “must-visit” town.

Church Stretton. - An old Victorian town surrounded by the Long Mynd and full of Antique shops and markets.

National Trust area - Carding Mill Valley, with Visitor Centre and “Waymarked trails”.

Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre (Craven Arms). - Grass roofed Visitor centre with virtual balloon ride over Shropshire and clues to the mysteries of the landscape.
